林文刚教授在美国新泽西州韦因的威廉·帕特森大学(William Paterson University)执教,主持传播学的传播教育计划。他是第一位获得纽约大学媒介环境学博士的华人,是媒介环境学会(Media Ecology Association)5位发起人之一,任该学会副会长。他大力推动学会的组织发展工作,推进学会在国内外的发展,使之以分会的形式加入美国传播学会(National Communication Association)和国际传播学会(International Communication Association)。这两个国际平台有助于推进媒介环境学会的学术研究,比如,在这两个国际学会的年会上,媒介环境学会都组织了专题讨论会。
他曾担任中华传播学会(Association for Chinese Communication Studies)会长,兼任该学会国际和跨文化传播分会会长,及其亚太美洲分会会长等职务,目前的其他社会兼职有城市传播基金会董事。林文刚教授是《媒介环境学:思想沿革与多维视野》(Perspectives on Culture, Technology, and Communication: The Media Ecology Tradition)的编者和作者,该书2006年获媒介环境学会刘易斯·芒福德杰出学术成就奖,已出简体字版(何道宽译,北京大学出版社,2007)、繁体字版(何道宽译,巨流出版社,高雄,2010)、韩文版(李东侯译,首尔,2009);韩文版2009年入选韩国科学院表彰的人文社科优秀图书。其他著作有《寻找声音:卡拉OK与美籍华人身份的构建》、《代代传承:文化身份的维持》、《我们的声音:文化、族裔身份和传播》、《世界卡拉OK研究:全球技术、地方歌声》等。他在学术刊物上发表论文,与他人合作出书,撰写章节。他与家人现居纽约曼哈顿。近年,他从媒介环境的角度研究都市饮食文化。
