林文刚教授在美国新泽西州韦因的威廉·帕特森大学（William Paterson University）执教，主持传播学的传播教育计划。他是第一位获得纽约大学媒介环境学博士的华人，是媒介环境学会（Media Ecology Association）5位发起人之一，任该学会副会长。他大力推动学会的组织发展工作，推进学会在国内外的发展，使之以分会的形式加入美国传播学会（National Communication Association）和国际传播学会（International Communication Association）。这两个国际平台有助于推进媒介环境学会的学术研究，比如，在这两个国际学会的年会上，媒介环境学会都组织了专题讨论会。

他曾担任中华传播学会（Association for Chinese Communication Studies）会长，兼任该学会国际和跨文化传播分会会长，及其亚太美洲分会会长等职务，目前的其他社会兼职有城市传播基金会董事。林文刚教授是《媒介环境学：思想沿革与多维视野》（Perspectives on Culture, Technology, and Communication: The Media Ecology Tradition）的编者和作者，该书2006年获媒介环境学会刘易斯·芒福德杰出学术成就奖，已出简体字版（何道宽译，北京大学出版社，2007）、繁体字版（何道宽译，巨流出版社，高雄，2010）、韩文版（李东侯译，首尔，2009）；韩文版2009年入选韩国科学院表彰的人文社科优秀图书。其他著作有《寻找声音：卡拉OK与美籍华人身份的构建》、《代代传承：文化身份的维持》、《我们的声音：文化、族裔身份和传播》、《世界卡拉OK研究：全球技术、地方歌声》等。他在学术刊物上发表论文，与他人合作出书，撰写章节。他与家人现居纽约曼哈顿。近年，他从媒介环境的角度研究都市饮食文化。
